Special Selection

Mulu National Park

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mulu National Park has plenty to offer. From caving through extensive cave systems, trekking up to see the Pinnacles, and watching the millions of bats pouring out of the Deer Cave at dusk.

A Guide to the Mulu Show Caves

DEER CAVE – Home to millions of bats, it was also used by deers for shelter.  The cave also houses the Garden of Eden and the famous profile of Abraham Lincoln. In good weather in the evenings, well over a million bats form a ‘black cloud’ leading out from the entrance, in search of food.

LANG CAVE – Normally combined with the Deer Cave visit, it is the smallest of the show caves. Its highlights are the stalactites and stalagmites, although it does house some bats, swiftlets, and occasionally snakes.

CLEARWATER CAVE – Known as Asia’s longest cave, it contains a subterranean river partly accessible by boat. Its proper plank walk makes it an enjoyable journey while exploring the cave. A crystal clear pool awaits visitors after the cave tour, many of which will take the opportunity to go for a refreshing dip.

WIND CAVE – The tour to this cave is normally paired up with Clearwater Cave due to its location along the way there and being part of the Clearwater system. Its highlights are stalactites, stalagmites, and the King’s Chamber which is illuminated by rock corals.

  • Niah National Park is another National Park situated to the southwest of Miri. It is worth a visit as it is an important prehistoric site dating back to the Palaeolithic ages some 40,000 years ago, the oldest recorded human settlement in East Malaysia. The Great Cave has a spectacular entrance with archaeological excavation still taking place nearby. Finds from Niah Caves include Pleistocene chopping tools, Neolithic axes, pottery, shell jewellery, boats, and even iron tools from the Iron Age. The Painted Cave even has paintings and wooden coffin ‘death ships’.
