Sabah’s Wildest Places

This tour brings you to the two great wildlife destinations of Eastern Sabah; Danum Valley Conservation Area and Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Potential sightings include Pygmy Elephants, Orang Utans, Proboscis Monkeys, Gibbons, Tarsiers and a host of unique birds including the Spectacled Flowerpecker. You may also see traces of the extremely rare and elusive Sumatran Rhinoceros and Clouded Leopard.

Itinerary – 5 Days 4 Nights

Day 1 – Lahad Datu – Danum Valley (L D): After morning arrival at Lahad Datu Airport, meet your guide, then proceed on a 2½ hour drive to the Borneo Rainforest Lodge, built alongside the lovely Danum River.  After lunch at the Lodge, trek to an ancient Kadazandusun burial site, the “Coffin Cliffs”, believed to be about 700 years old. Bones, skulls and a slightly decayed ironwood coffin are scattered on the cliff ledge. Later, descend to the natural “Jacuzzi Pool” for a cooling soak. Return to the lodge for dinner (1900hrs), followed by a briefing and slide presentation on nature conservation and the flora and fauna of the Danum Valley. Then hop onto an open-top jeep for the night safari ride. The jeep is equipped with spotlights to reveal the nocturnal animals in the undergrowth. Overnight at lodge.

Day 2 – Danum Valley – Tembaling Waterfall Trek (B L D): After breakfast, trek to Tembaling Waterfall and marvel at one of the world’s oldest rainforest, its rich flora and fauna. The trek takes approximately 2 hours. If weather permits, you may take a refreshing swim in the cold, unpolluted rainforest stream. There are ample opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. After a picnic lunch in the rainforest, return to the lodge area to continue birdwatching and wildlife spotting. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 3 – Danum Valley – Tabin Wildlife Reserve – Mud Volcano Camp (B L D): Wake up early and take  a guided jungle walk to the 27 metre high L-shaped canopy walkway anchored by sturdy Megaris and Majau trees, which gives visitors a bird’s eye view of the forest and is a perfect vantage point for bird watching. Return via the fascinating Nature Trail. After breakfast at the lodge, check out and proceed to Tabin Wildlife Reserve (3 ½ hours).

After lunch at the Tabin Wildlife Resort, embark on a short trek through the jungle to the mud volcano.  Try to identify the multitude of animal footprints belonging to different wildlife. The adventurous can try the effects of the volcanic mud, said to be very good for the complexion. Walk up the observation tower and admire the contrasting landscape of the bare area and its surrounding thick forest where birds are commonly sighted.  Tour guides will set up camp for the night at the observation tower.  Stay quiet in order not to disturb wildlife which is more active in the cooler hours of evening and early morning.  Stay alert during the night to observe any visits by wildlife to feed on minerals at the mud volcano. Dinner and overnight at mud volcano camp.

Day 4 – Tabin Wildlife Reserve – Core Area and Lipad Waterfall (B L D): Early in the morning, break camp and trek back to the resort for breakfast. After breakfast, drive to the reserve’s core area for animal spotting and trekking through the lush green rainforest, known for its rich diversity of plants and animal species. The trek continues to the Lipad Waterfall.  Take a dip in the natural pool and enjoy a natural and refreshing shower under the waterfall. Return to Tabin Wildlife Resort for lunch and to check into your luxurious jungle lodge bungalow. In the afternoon you are free at leisure to take a dip in the river, stroll to the nearby rock pool, or try out the Tabin Rainforest Foot Soak, made with a natural blend of tropical herbs that help relax tired muscles after jungle treks. After dinner at the resort, view a slide presentation on Tabin’s unique species and ecosystems, then proceed for a night walk under the stars in search of nocturnal wildlife. Overnight at resort.

Day 5 – Tabin Wildlife Reserve – Transfer Out (B): Early risers may wish to join the early morning bird walk before breakfast (small additional charge). After breakfast, free at leisure until transfer to Lahad Datu Airport (2½ hours) for departure flight.
